New tobacco and nicotine product law: what it means

Since 1 October 2024, the new Tobacco Products Act (TobPA) is in effect in Switzerland, bringing stricter regulations aimed at protecting young people from the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine. This new law prohibits the sale of tobacco products, vaping devices, and nicotine pouches to anyone under the age of 18. At ISL, we are committed to safeguarding students through substance prevention education and limiting exposure to these products. Students therefore are forbidden from bringing tobacco or nicotine products or devices onto campus. For students and parents, this means a heightened focus on limiting access to these products, as well as encouraging discussions at home about the risks associated with tobacco and nicotine use.

Some young people mistakenly believe that tobacco-free nicotine products, like e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches, are harmless alternatives to smoking. However, these products can contain alarmingly high levels of nicotine and can be just as addictive as traditional cigarettes. With the new law limiting access to these products, underage users may experience withdrawal symptoms, including sleepiness, lack of concentration in class, anxiety, irritability and agitation. At ISL, our nurses are happy to consult with students or concerned parents. If you have questions, need guidance, or are interested in connecting to local resources, you can reach our nurses for more information.

At ISL, substance prevention education is an important part of our well-being curriculum. Students learn about the risks associated with tobacco, nicotine, and other substances through well-being lessons, homeroom discussions, and sessions with external specialists in substance use prevention. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed, healthy decisions. Parents are encouraged to explore our curriculum on the school’s website to learn more about how we teach substance prevention and support student well-being.

Safeguarding children is everyone’s responsibility, and by working together, we can create a safe and healthy environment for our young people.
