Academic Guidance and Counsellors
Academic Guidance at ISL involves helping students with high school class selection, guiding them through the university research and application process, and ensuring that school documentation is sent to universities around the world.
Steven McArthur has been an Academic Guidance counsellor for the past five years. He joined ISL with over 20 years of teaching experience in England, Malaysia and Thailand. He is originally from the UK and he has obtained his degrees from Brighton and Exeter Universities. He has recently been an Assistant Principal at Bangkok Patana School, Thailand, where he has also been the Athletics Director and a Head of Year for the senior students. Steve regularly visits universities in the UK, US and Canada and he really enjoys working with the students at ISL. Steve moved to Switzerland with his wife, Jo, and daughters Sophie and Kiera. His main hobbies are sports and he is a keen football, squash and golf player.
Stephen Darby joined ISL in August of 2017. His roots are in Kansas City, Missouri, and he has spent the last 12 years working with students from all over the world in a variety of educational settings. From working as a high school counsellor in a US, public high school, an international school in South Korea, to a boarding school in the Swiss alps, and a large international school in Dubai, the experience he has accrued has been used to help students navigate the complexities of teenage life, and confidently pursue their post-secondary goals.
Stephen received his BA in Psychology, as well as his MEd in Educational Counseling and Psychology from the University of Missouri - Columbia. As an active member of both International Association for College Admission Counselors (IACAC) and International School Counselor Association (ISCA), he attends conferences focused around adolescent mental health, university admissions, and visits a number of university campuses each year. Outside of work, you will find Stephen on his bicycle or traveling to snow covered mountains to hit the slopes.
Yvonne Secker joined the school in August 1999 as International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Coordinator and was appointed High School Principal in 2004. Having previously worked as academic and student counsellor at an international school in Spain, she also took on these roles in the early years of the Diploma Programme at ISL. Yvonne has always worked closely with the Diploma Programme students and the academic guidance counsellors, and she now joins the team, having stepped down from her role as High School Principal at the end of June 2017. Yvonne continues to teach in the mathematics department.
