Saturday 12 and 25 November

There are a couple of mathematics events happening locally that we wanted to bring your attention to.

Firstly, the annual FSJM maths competition opens again. This Swiss competition is open to children and adults, so you may be interested yourself! The first round is a set of questions completed independently, and those who are successful then get invited to a semi-final, which for the last two years has been held at EPFL. In recent years, we have had both students and teachers qualifying for the later and final rounds. It is easy for students to enter independently by registering online. Note that the competition can be completed in English. To celebrate the opening of the competition, the Swiss Museum of Games in Vevey is hosting an event this Sunday 12 November. Note that this event will be in French and participants will also need to register.

Secondly, on Saturday 25 November, EPFL is holding a “celebration of mathematics day”. The aim of this event is to “promote EPFL’s mathematical excellence in all its forms, enabling the general public, enthusiasts and experts in the field to come together in a great celebration of mathematics”. The event is open to adults and children from 8 years old, with activities both in French and English. Again participants need to register online. More information can be found on their webpage.
