Written by ISL | Apr 26, 2024 8:23:00 AM

On 13 and 14 March, the halls of ISL echoed with the sound of music, laughter, and the unmistakable buzz of excitement as our students took on the ambitious production of Disney's "High School Musical." Step behind the curtains to discover the hard work, dedication, and sheer joy that defined this spectacular event.

A Cast Full of Stars

With 38 talented performers ranging from Year 7 to Year 12 and an indispensable crew of 10 backstage, our production was nothing short of a large-scale theatrical operation. Directed by the passionate Tim Fessler alongside the talented Anna Baker, Andrew Capes, and Emily Moran, the cast and crew spent over 23 weeks and 65 hours perfecting their roles, dances, and cues to bring this beloved musical to life.

Why "High School Musical"?

Choosing "High School Musical" was a no-brainer. Its fun, high-energy vibe and positive message make it a perfect fit for our diverse group of students. The musical offered a plethora of opportunities for students to shine, whether in the spotlight or behind the scenes, ensuring that everyone had a chance to be part of this incredible journey.

Tim Fessler, one of our dedicated teachers, summed up the experience beautifully:

“'We’re All In This Together' is never more appropriate than when rehearsing and performing a musical. ISL’s production of High School Musical was a joy to work on from start to finish. The students brought huge energy, enthusiasm, and a jaw-dropping level of talent to the show. To watch close to 40 students on stage, together in time and harmony, all clearly having the best time is one of the most rewarding experiences there are."

A Student's Transformation

Arthur, who played the lead role of Troy Bolton, reflected on his personal growth throughout the production:

“Reflecting on my journey as Troy in High School Musical, I've realised it was more than just a role; it was a transformation. Over those 6/7 months, I found myself transitioning from Arthur to Troy in more ways than one. Stepping into Troy's shoes wasn't just about memorizing lines and hitting the right notes; it was about embracing his journey of self-discovery, leadership, and the courage to chase your dreams. And yes, I guess that in some ways, I could easily relate to his character.”

Arthur, as Troy Bolton, and the crew performing the iconic 'Get'cha Head in the Game" scene, perfectly capturing Troy's inner conflict and determination.

“But beyond the stage, I found something even more profound — friendship. Through countless rehearsals and shared laughter, I forged new friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. High School Musical wasn't just a production; it was a family.

Even as I move on to new adventures, I know that a part of me will always resonate with Troy's journey and spirit. As I prepare to bid farewell to this chapter of my life and embark on a new adventure, I can't help but feel a sense of bittersweet nostalgia. But in a way, High School Musical has provided me with the closure I needed to embrace the next chapter with open arms. Theatre has a unique way of inspiring and changing lives, and I'm grateful for every moment.

Thank you to everyone who made this journey… unforgettable”

Living the Dream as Sharpay

Avery, our Sharpay, shared her excitement and passion for her role:

“High School Musical was such an important part of school to me. Ever since I was little and first watched the film, I dreamed of being Sharpay. When I got the role, it was a dream come true for me. I could not prepare myself for all the chaos and fun I would have in the next 6/7 months. That first rehearsal getting to know everyone, and the songs were truly beautiful. Through the hard-working months we all got brought together as a team… you could say we were all in this together…. I had to put that in somewhere .

Sharpay was such a special role to play for me. She has a huge attitude and overall was super fun to play! Her character was an amazing addition to the play and personally I loved all the clothes I got to wear as her! She had amazing songs with her brother Ryan and dance routines. Personally, I had so much fun bossing around Ryan because he is my brother in real life! That made the situation so much fun to work with and helped us build our bond even stronger. Talking about building bonds I made so many new connections that can’t be broken. Whether it was acting silly during rehearsals or just seeing them in the hallway and making jokes related to the play.

High School Musical was truly special to me, and I can never forget all the opportunities I got. I would like to give a very special thanks to Mr Fessler and Ms Baker for putting this all together. They truly did a wonderful job and it ended up being such an amazing experience. I would also like to thank the tech team. Walking on to the stage for the dress rehearsal and having all the lights and music just brought everything to life and was just unbelievable.”

Avery shines as Sharpay, embodying her ambitious and flamboyant spirit with every scene in 'High School Musical'.

“Walking on to the stage for the first time was breathtaking. I could not believe how many of my friends and family came to watch the performance. (Thanks to my friends for putting up with all my singing through those weeks and even now). All the roars of applause were amazing and if you could not hear and the end when the curtains closed… let’s just say we were all very excited that we had pulled it off!!! I will wrap it up now, but I will never forget this experience and can’t wait to see what we will come up with next!”

A Spectacle of Support

The turnout was phenomenal, with over 500 attendees across the performances, bringing together family, friends, and fans of the arts, all cheering for the incredible talent of our students.

Beyond the Performance

The production was not just about singing and acting. The design team, led by Andrew Capes, and the technical crew brought their best to the stage, creating a vibrant and immersive experience for both the audience and the performers. Mood boards and design concepts transformed our school auditorium into a lively high school setting that was both authentic and enchanting.
