During his time at the International School of Lausanne (ISL), Raphael Bitter (Class of 2022) developed a deep interest in research and problem-solving. Now studying at the University of Toronto, one of the world’s leading institutions, Raphael is pursuing his passion for biomedical sciences.
Reflecting on his academic journey, he credits ISL for equipping him with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a competitive university environment. His love for science was sparked in ISL’s well-equipped laboratories, where he enjoyed conducting experiments and engaging in discussions with his teachers.
Speaking with Ms Edmunds, ISL’s Academic Counsellor, Raphael shared how the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme prepared him for university life. “The IB’s focus on critical thinking, independent research, and time management made the transition much smoother,” he explained. His Extended Essay project, which focused on medical research, was particularly valuable, providing early exposure to in-depth academic research and helping him refine his analytical skills. Raphael also credited ISL’s Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course for encouraging him to question assumptions and develop a more nuanced perspective on global issues.
Settling into university life in Canada was an exciting challenge. Raphael highlighted the vast array of opportunities available at the University of Toronto, from cutting-edge research projects to extracurricular activities. “The level of academic rigour is high, but ISL gave me the tools to manage my workload effectively,” he noted. He was particularly drawn to the university’s renowned biomedical research facilities, where he is now involved in ongoing projects related to genetics and disease prevention. Beyond academics, Raphael has also embraced student life by joining various clubs and organisations, including a student-led medical research society where he collaborates with peers on innovative projects.
Transitioning from ISL to university was not without its hurdles. Raphael acknowledged that adapting to a larger academic setting required significant self-discipline and resilience. “At ISL, we had a close-knit community where teachers were always available for support. University is different – you need to take initiative and seek out help when needed,” he shared. One of the biggest adjustments was managing the sheer volume of coursework, but his experience with IB assessments and deadlines had prepared him well for the demands of university studies. He also found comfort in the international student community, which helped him navigate the cultural and academic shifts of studying abroad.
For current ISL students considering studying abroad, Raphael’s advice is simple: be proactive and embrace every opportunity. “University is what you make of it. Engage with your professors, join student organisations, and step outside your comfort zone,” he encouraged. He also emphasised the importance of building strong study habits early, as they will prove invaluable in higher education. Additionally, he recommended that students take advantage of ISL’s extensive university counselling services to explore different academic paths and find the right fit for their aspirations.
